After spending a night with our kind hosts from the plane, we stayed at a hostel right on the coast, at Cottesloe Beach. The area was really nice, only the weather let us down and it rained for 2 days! The locals were happy as it was the first rain for 3 months, not that that made us feel any better about it! Having decided to stay only for a week, we moved to a different hostel in the city. Fortunately, the weather improved and we managed to see some amazing sites in Perth. The WACA was pretty impressive (Though has since been dwarfed by the MCG), and Kings Park and Fremantle were really nice. We managed a visit back to the beach when the sun returned, which made up for our earlier disappointment!
Perth itself is amazingly relaxed, and is more like a big town than a city. Hardly any high rise buildings, but some good views. For such a young country there is an interesting history too. The Round house prison in 'Freo', 'home' to the original convicts was an experience. The prison made us feel a little better about our hostel room, which had us and 2 others, one who had been staying there for 11 months, and planned to stay another 2 years!!
We managed a quick (unofficial) visit to the WACA where we had to climb over a couple of fences, and also had our first "footy" experience, of Aussie Rules. We saw a training game at the Subiaco Oval. The pitch is massive, and they are all very fit, though some of the rules still desert us!
All in all, a pretty good start to Australia. We are now on our 2nd day in Melbourne. Went to see Aus v Ind in the cricket at the MCG yesterday which was amazing. We are off tonight to see the 'stars' of Neighbours! Melbourne is a lot more active than Perth, which should mean plenty to do over the next week...
Love to all, Ben and Sam. x
