Slovenia is a great outdoor adventure waiting to happen - 4,000 caves throughout the country with gorges and rushing rivers, warm lakes, rolling hills and farmland. As soon as the train came in through the north western corner of the country into Ljubljana and us driving further south to the tourist farm where we stayed, we realized we needed more time… In 5 short days we were able to take in 3 caves, a gorge, a swim at a beautiful lake and a luge ride down a ski hill. The gorge reminded us most of B.C. but all the green on the hills made us think of home too.
The tourist farm gave us an opportunity to meet other families; something we had lacked up until then. The donkeys, soccer field and trampoline brought everyone out before and after dinner for a bit of activity.Sean had a great outlet when dinner got too long and conversational. The generous, home cooked meals were pretty good, too.Three daughters served breakfast each morning; the littlest, Therese 2, followed in behind with her hands on her hips making sure things were going according to plan.
We all agreed the highlight was Krizna Jama. After gearing up with waterproof overalls, helmets and headlamps, we travelled by foot and 3 different boats 3 km into the cave along paths and 13 lakes with our guide pulling the rubber raft over the shallow spots. We saw a rare cave spider 1 km into the trip.Ancient bears hibernated as much as 800m into the cave in total darkness each winter, using only smell to find their way. There is something really special about 5 people shining their headlamps on stalactites and stalagmites deep inside a cave, knowing very few people have experienced this.We won't forget this soon.
