Update from last days in Livingston, last thursday we went on a tour to the Siete Altares which was really nice and chill barely a hike through the jungle to these natural water streams and formations of rocks and pools. After an hour there we got back on the boat and went to a deserted island beach called Playa Blanca. No one lives there but some guys turn up in the morning to take money from tourists to sit on the beach and they provide hammocks etc. it was white sand, palm trees perfect weather and lovely. the sea was a little murky but still went in it.
so then friday morning at 6:45 we took the boat from Livingston to Punta Gorda, Belize. So weird coming onto theisland, we were met off the boat by an immigration official with a clipboard with a register of our names and we were only allowed off the boat once he had called our names! funny. and strictly no photography in or around immigaration and of no guards or policemen anywhere. strict eh! not gona mess with that! that boat ride only took an hour and we waited for the next bus to Belize City which we got just before 10. it was a chicken bus as usual. Unfortunately we went to all the major towns in Belize first from east to west coast and then up north, through the capital Belmopan and finally to Belize City after about 7 hours on this bus, and eating a wicked chicken curry burrito from a seller that came on the bus. Was one of the nicest burritos ive ever had! when we got to BC we hopped in a taxi to the boat over to the Cayes, waited and then finally got the last boat which took 45 mins.
Its paradise here. The weather is perfect, the caribbean ocean is aqua blue and crystal clear and the island is covered in sand. Its pretty small this island but so caribbean. All the locals here are your typical caribbean people, the swagger when they walk, they have huge arses and certainly know how to dance dirrrrty!
We have a really nice hotel not a hostel for once! me and Chloe both have huge king size beds and a private bathroom, we have maid service too which is so cool and its cheaper than the hostels on the island that also have bed bug issues! so we made the right decision.
first night out we went to the club next door to our hotel called Oceanside and it was crazy. One huge black woman was dancing so crazy, it was like watching people having sex on the dancefloor with clothing on of course but she would bend over and put her hands on the floor and some guy would come up behind her and thrust, Ive never seen anything like that in my life, but that i have been told is the popular dance style here and everyone does it!
Saturday we chilled all day then 10mins before 2pm we got persuaded to go on a snorkelling trip for half day to 3 locations. belize has the second largest coral reef in the world going from Mexico to Nicaragua i think someone said. so we quickly got ready and went, our captain was a Belizean through and through called Marph. He helped me out as it was my first time snorkelling. We first went to coral alley, where you see all types of crazy coloured fish and corals. Second location was shark and stingray alley, where as soon as we arrived there were about 6 nurse sharks and tons of rays swimming round the boat. There were also baracudas there which look so evil! So Marph fed them some fish which kept them nearby and we jumped in and swam with them and snorkelled there with them. I touched a stingray. Marph kept cuddling the nurse sharks! crazy man. next location was more corals and weird fish. It was the most incredible thing i have done so far on my journey and one of my favourite life experiences i think. no one told us we'd be swimming with sharks. certainly gives an adrenaline rush!
That night we went for a drink at The Split which is where Caye Caulker split in two by a hurricane a few years back, and we watched the sunset a bit although we were a little too late and only caught the end! then we treated ourselves to a meal out, as everything here is so expensive so we've been living on peanut butter sandwiches! but chloe had lobster and i had pork chops and tried lobster but i didnt like it, we both had ceviche to start with too. I got talking to some really interesting people, one is a country manager of GVI in Mexico, i almost asked him for a job! and an English guy who has a company setting up conservation areas abroad and he has been trying to get one set up on an island about an hour from here and then GVI will send the volunteers there. They were having business meetings. Very interesting.
After we went to Oceanside again and watched some interesting dancing again, Then at 1am we were treated to "Barbie & The Candyman". Yes its as bad as u think. first Candyman came on and danced around on stage with his coconut milked up body, he picked on a poor english traveller in front of me and lapdanced her! she did not know what to do! her friends thought it was hilarious and kept taking photos. Then Barbie came on, doing some intimate dancing with poles and chairs and the floor. they both took most of their clothes off too. was almost uncomfortable to watch at times or cringeworthy id say!!!
Sunday was a no-day for me, i came down with flu and slept all day only being awake for about 3 hours the whole day and when i did try to go out i was so weak i had to go back after 15mins and could barely lift my head at all for the rest of the day.
Monday morning i felt rough still but i forced myself out of bed then chloe said she was going to go on an all day snorkelling trip again this time to see manatees hopefully so i couldnt miss out and even if it meant seeing them from the boat and not snorkelling i was determined not to stay in bed again, so i went. I snorkelled the whole time but i exhausted myself out again. Saw lots more fish that i hadnt seen before, and the sharks were there again. we saw 1 manatee from the boat but by the time we got there it had swam away. which was disappointing but still a good day. Got some underwater photos from a couple that were on the trip later on too which was nice. i took another turn for the worst again and was bedridden again in the evening, but bless her Chloe looked after me by getting me sugary drinks and pills that solved everything! miracle pills here! Didnt help that i got really sunburnt too whilst snorkelling even though i put tons of 45spf cream on its so much stronger in the water with the reflection. we were all burnt who went.
Today i spent the day recouperating and chilling on the balcony of the hotel and finally had some sort of apetite back, first time in 2 days ive actually eaten because i wanted. We have been invited to join a local family and some Americans on vacation for dinner tonight because theyre in the hotel rooms next door and they went fishing today and caught tons of fish so they said come by and have some so we are gona do that, fresh fish for free...perfect eh! cant say no to that!
Not sure if im leaving here tomorrow or Thursday, i think i might just stay and relax for another day to make sure im definately better cus theres nothing worse than being in a s***ty hostel where you cant sleep let alone rest. so here seems the best option.
