Today the Sharks woke up to beautiful sunshine and the short 20 minute coach trip to St-Hubert, a fantastic venue with bowling green style pitches - a footballers dream!
Our games today were playing the 3 other Group 2nd place finishers from the previous day.
Our first game was against TIPS from Finland sporting their green strips. With Ella struggling with a calf strain and declaring herself unable to start the game, we really were down to the bare bones! We lined up to start with the injured Ellen in goal, a back four of Kaysha (injured from last weeks cup semi), Robyn, Ellise and Walesy. Midfield was Chloe, Meg, Lucy, Emza with Ellice and Chloe M up front.
From the off, the adversity of losing Ella seemed to spur the girls on and they were off to a flyer when lovely midfield play on 9 minutes played in Ellice who beautifully rolled the ball into Chloe M's path and she rifled home from the edge of the area.
The second half continued with great effort, TIPS coming more into the game. But the resilient Sharks held out with some tremendous defending. Class!
Our second game saw us up against GVI from Denmark. They had scored a stack of goals in their first day group so we knew we would be in for a tough game. Ellice back in goal for this one, Ella giving it a go even with a pronounced limp but desperate to give it all for the team. As expected, GVI came at us from the start with some cracking passing. The Sharks were up against it and it got worse when on 5 minutes, Chloe M was injured and replaced by Ellie P. The Sharks still up against it and it was about to get worse. Robyn went into a block tackle and immediately dropped to the floor holding her knee and screaming in pain. Straight away, we knew it was serious and the game was temporarily halted whilst the organisers (who were top class!) arranged for an ambulance to take her to the local hospital in Boxmeer. We were all sickened but Robyn wanted the girls to carry on and the girls wanted to do it for Robyn. Chloe M came back on, limping, to replace her! The game restarted with the second half and at this point, we would have settled for a point. However what happened in the next 15 minutes was simply sensational. Five minutes into the half and Ella ran down the left and crossed into the area, the keeper couldn't deal with it and Ellie P tapped home at the backpost. Amazing!! 1-0. As if one wasn't enough, a through ball to Chloe M who brought the ball down brilliantly, cut inside the defender and rifled past the keeper - dreamland! Absolutely sensational. 2-0. We saw out the win with the Sharks doing all the pressing. Simply amazing under the circumstances.
We went to see Robyn immediately who was now receiving a morphine injection to ease the pain before being sent off in the ambulance!
With one game left, we knew that a single point would clinch the group and we would end up finishing 5th in the overall competition.
Constantia from Holland were next up. Again, thegirls were superb. We were all action, every last drop of effort given and we scored with the last kick of the first half with Chloe A scoring after brilliant work from Chloe M and Ella.
The second half and the girls again showed amazing character, battle and spirit restricting the Dutch side to two longrange eforts only that didn't trouble Ellice.
The final whistle and we had done it.
Absolutely awesome!!!
Words can't describe how proud we all are of these girls. We have been decimated by injuries lately and today made it even worse. But these girls NEVER know when to give up and are an absolute pleasure to work with.
The winning of our group saw us secure 5th place out of 16 teams,. The age band we were entered into was Under 15 date of births 01/01/97 to 31/12/98. The majority of our players have only just turned 14!!
Played 5 games, Won 4, Lost 1 to the eventual 2nd placed team Cambridge CofE. We conceded 1 goal! The girls were simply AMAZING!!
Well done girls - we are all so proud of you.
