Beckie's Big Bling
I arrived in Hervey Bay after my 24 hours on the bus and really nice to see my cousin Julie and her family. They kindly offered the use of their motel room as they were staying in the town while looking for a more permenant residence. Julie and Mike's 2 boys, Jamie 7 and Matt 10, were full of life and really nice to spend time with them all as they are going to be in Oz for at least the next 2 years.
They quickly got me back into the holiday lifestyle and a view of the ocean with my morning tea was certainly a luxury great to enjoy! On sunday we went out into the bay to see the dolphins and amazing as they swam in the fast moving water at the bow of the boat. Also saw lots of young dolphins, very cute!! We also then went for lunch at the Boat Habour club and a few hours on the slot machines meant I could recoup the money I had spent on my boat trip!! Bargain!
We also visited a few of the outer towns and beaches around Hervey Bay. Bundaberg was a large, unexciting town and Woodgate beach was beautiful as we walked for 2 miles as the only people on the beach!
I also did a day trip out to Fraser Island, the largest sand island in the world. A really good day, seeing lots of widlife and driving around in 4x4s on the sand!! Saw more dolphins on the boat trip over to the island and there is even a ship wreck on the east coast beach of the island to visit.
However I think the highlight for me has to be my trip to Lady Elliot island. Only reachable by small plane, the island is completely surrounded by a lagoon. When snorkelling I saw turtles and loads of amazing coloured fish. I even had my first encounter with a shark! Luckily only a reef shark but I can tell you, it managed to make me take on a few mouthfuls of salt water in shock!! I am sure the boat guys were thinking, typical got to go and fish out another stupid tourist!!
Soon I am travelling up north to the whitsunday islands to hopefully do some sailing around the outer reef. Fingers crossed for no more sharks!!
