The glacier hike was amazing! Im not sure what i expected hiking on a glacier to be like, but it wasnt walking on top of a big bit of ice, it was walking (and a little bit swimming!) through the ice. we hiked for hours through cravasses that were about the width of my hips and as tall as a 2 storey houses, infact the first one was so narrow we had to go sideways and take our backpacks off, when i tried to turn my hips got wedged. im not sure how the guide knew the way, but about 2pm we came out on top of the ice and the view was amazing. the whole hike was so fun and unlike anything else. it was absolutely freezing and we hadnt taken the waterproof troussers as the people in the office said not to bother and that we'd only get too hot, but we walls of the cravasses we dripping wet and so narrow that we were continuously rubbed up against them, so we were soaked and frozen. the guide also found us a hole that we could slide through that was just big enough for a person on their tummy, it was too tiny for me but the sounds that came from the hole when julie was sliding through were hilarious! if we werent quite wet and cold enough from all that though, our guide, tim, managed to take us a way where all the melted ice had collected in a big puddle in the bottom of the cravasse and the walls were too steep to go round the puddle so we had to go through it. it came up to about half way up our thighs and was about 5 meters long and as glacier pool tend to be, was absolutely freezing! i however managed to fall over in the puddle and got myself soaked right up to my belly button, drenching my camera in my bum bag in the process! i have never been so cold and our clothes of course didnt dry, but worse of all our boots, that were waterproof so our feet didnt get wet, were now full or water and it wouldnt drain out! but we still loved it. didnt like tim so much after that tho.
the morning after julie did her skydive! and she only cried a very little bit!
now we are in wanaka which is one of the towns near the ski slopes, so yesterday, julie and i and our new girl friends gemma and keely had a day of snowboard lessons, with neil from yorkshire! it was so much fun and i am getting really good, i can do the turns and everything and bum is somehow not bruised at all! the boys from our bus who were also up the slopes saw me and thought i looked so good that i couldnt be one of the girls they knew! i was so proud!daddy i have a new hobby!
tomorro we are off to queenstown, the last new place we stop in NZ. it also has ski slopes near so we are planning on more snowboarding and some skiing if we can afford it. and then its off to OZ to meet george!
