I had been really looking forward to today as an opportunity to see New York with two old New Yorkers; we got off to an earlyish start with breakfast downtown bought from a lovely patisserie in Battery Park where we sat out looking at the boats sailing out of the harbour and the Statue of Liberty in the distance which was really nice as many locals took their dogs out for morning walks, reminding us of Pimms back at home although none of the dogs we saw came close to looking as adorable as him!
Nipping up town we came out at the Bloomingdales stop on the Subway and wandered along to Central Park for a little walk before the city fully got going for the day.Central Park was busy already and we saw plenty of cyclists/runners pounding along "the Mall" before visiting Strawberry Fields where John Lennon was shot and the fountain near the Boathouse (where Carrie and Big fall into the lake in SATC).We winded up outside the Metropolitan Museum of Art - I had forgotten quite how massive it was and the collection of Greek and Roman art that we looked at was the most extensive collection ever. After exhausting ourselves downstairs we had lunch up at the top of the museum with the most spectacular views of the NYC skyline (and a couple of wierd pieces of modern art including a yellow balloon dog - random!) The Met also had an exhibition of Turner's life works which was very impressive and well laid out.We finished up with the impressionist gallery stuffed full with Picasso, Monet, Reubens, Van Gogh, Cezanne etc - definitely worth another visit!
Then it was time to get drenched!New York rain is VERY wet and soaked us through within a few minutes of stepping outside so it was pretty amusing sheltering between Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdales before heading over towards the Rockefeller Centre for seafood before seeing "Boeing Boeing" on Broadway. The play was hilarious! And a pretty all star cast including Kate Hudson's friend in "How to lose a guy in ten days" and one of the main characters from the Mamma Mia movie! After a pretty full on day we quickly stopped off to see Times Square before hopping into anotheryellow taxi to downtown and bed...
