Retired & Traveling
We all woke up early to watch our "sail in" and it was really something to see! Even though Rich & I both have been to Venice twice before, we've never seen it from the viewpoint of a super cruise ship and the views were amazing! We were well about the rooftops and you could see city everywhere you looked. We sailed into the city being towed and actually wound thru on some of the larger canals to the port. We were all sporting our Longhorn shirts since Brian thought it would be fun to show our colors and this was our last chance! Wouldn't you know, it was the hottest day we'd had so far and we were all about to melt.
When we arrived, there were already at least 3 huge cruise ships & two more arrived right after us. :( Needless to say, Venice was crowded!! And very warm!! We thought it was going to be cold here because when we left they were in the 50's but today was in the 80's. We caught the ship's shuttle (which was a major fiasco...first we couldn't find the exit to get off the ship in spite of asking several employees where the gangway was, then we stood in line for a long time to catch the shuttle--Rich was not a happy camper at the way Princess managed this). The shuttle took us to the St. Mark's Square area and we wandered around looking at buildings and souvenirs. You cannot imagine how many shops there are or how narrow the streets are until you see them in person.
Teena & I needed a bathroom break & felt like we were on a scavenger hunt of sorts w/all the signs pointing the way and twisting us thru the tiny streets but we finally found the toilet & then had to pay to use it, 1.50 Euros!! Ridiculous!
We had lunch at a quaint cafe right by the Rialto Bridge and then Rich & I parted ways with Brian & Teena & meandered back to our ship since I wasn't feeling 100% better. We have to put our large suitcases out tonight before we go to dinner so they can be taken to our bus for transfer to the airport in the morning, so we started packing. Rich & I have a 3:30 a.m. wake up call in order to meet our bus at 4:00 a.m. Ugh. Then our flight to Frankfort is at 6:45 a.m. We'll arrive back into Houston at 1:30'ish and I hope that our Global Entry works well.
Brian & Teena got back just in time to clean up & head off for our last meal together. After dinner, we caught another comedy act in one of the smaller venues and then it was time to call it a night. I can't believe how fast this trip went, it has been a wonderful vacation and I've convinced Rich we need to start planning our next Princess cruise & have even paid down a deposit on it. :)
Until next time, Bon Voyage!
