Longreach to Mount Isa 647K
First stop Winton 188K. We visited the Waltzing Matilda Centre/Museum, which included the Billabong Theatrette, listened to the ghost who relays the story of Waltzing Matilda. The history of Dagworth Station was a central part of the W/Matilda history along with the Banjo Patterson stories. Then visited the Coolibah Café, what else could we have but a lamington and Bushells Tea.
On the road again, next stop for lunch at the famous Walkabout Creek Hotel where Crocodile Dundee was filmed. Great photos on the wall of Paul Hogan and a lot of great memorabilia. Went to the bar to order a beer, said 'hello' to the barman 'How are you'? No response just a grunt, less personality than a wombat. I asked for a light beer and he replied in a very scathing tone, 'We don't have light beer here or food'. Well that's the end of you said Annette, so I joined her for a full strength beer and left 'happy' to his miserable bar.
Arrived at Mount Isa around 4pm, checked on line for accommodation and went to check out a few. At the first Motel the receptionist said '$100 for the room,' which was on the money so I said 'very good', 'just you'? No a twin room, well that's $198 for two! I said 'I thought you paid for the room', 'Not here love' she said without looking up from her late lunch or perhaps very large early dinner. On the blower to another place and spoke to the terrific Sonny, the manager from the Central Point Motel $127 for the night. Confirmed it wasn't PP. We arrived 15 minutes later and met the very welcoming and kind Sonny. He was terrific, had very interesting tats, especially around the ear but a wealth of knowledge. Told us what time the Rugby was on, where to eat etc. We had had enough, could not face going out again so we ordered pizza and watched the Rugby, which was more disappointing that the Pizza, which we didn't think, was possible. Another day over.
