Ready, set and we're on the road despite a few dramas and hiccups before we even left Melbourne. Hard to believe all the years of talking about doing 'the lap' for an extended period of time and all the months of preparation (and the endless buckets of money spent to get to this point!) and today is finally the day we said our long goodbyes to family and friends and hit the road with little plan other than to head west.
We took Princes Highway through Colac and Camperdown (where we lived on a dairy farm for a short time in 1992) and finally stopped for the night in Panmure before Warrnambool in a little free camp filled with back packers in their 'whiz banger' vans. If you don't know what a whiz banger is, it's the nickname given to vans with side doors that make that annoying sliding sound as they open and close.
We quickly set up and sat outside to eat a hot meal of tender lamb shanks thanks to my thermal cooker - and we popped our first (of many I hope) bottle of bubbles.
The night sky did not disappoint tonight! It was spectacular with moody blue hues and dark horizons.
Finally the sky turned inky black and the air got too chilly for comfort, even for Cadbury who was very happy to be chewing on shank bones! Time for a hot shower in our little ensuite and the end of day one, the first day the Zo-Mobil begins zooming west.
