so, its been a while since i last wrote-i've been movng around a lot! left broome couple of weeks ago now- was really sad to leave as made some good friends there and broome time is awesome! but decided i should try and see the rest of autralia! flew from broome to darwin with a few broome friends - graeme a scot, ryan -english and caroline-swedish. darwin was hot! very humid..not that i'm complaining! we stayed just one night in a hostel there - spent the day by the roof pool, wandered round the city - which doesnt really have a lot to see, but pretty nice sunset. a lot of people come to darwin for work or to see kakadu and lichfield national parks- there's not a lot else there! it was fun for one night though-we headed to a pub quiz at the vic- its not quite the pub quiz in the bridge inn in brewood though! extra points for audience participation meant i was up on the stage being carried around and thrown about in a pretty crazy version of musical statues, and playing the didgeridoo down a hoover! entertaining for those watchig i imagine! the following day we picked up our van and the four of us started the 1500km drive down the stuart highway to alice springs. stopping off at lichfield the first day and camping in the park was really cool- kangeroos and wallabees, loadsa gorgeous waterfalls. altrhough many inhabitted with crocodiles :( campfire at night and slept in the tent as although the van was meant to sleep 4 its wouldve beeen one hell of a squeeze! from lichfield we drove down to daly wtaers..a town which literally had a pub and a camping ground, but one of the only places mentioned on our map and one of the few towns we passed. the third day we camped at barrow creek having taken a few pictures of us holding up devils marbles (a photo that i think every backpacker probably has!) driving into alice sprngs we stopped at a mango winery for wine tasting- it was actually pretty nice. annies hostel was immediately fun with a nice pool and big bar and beer garden and $5 meals - much welcomed after living on suasages for the 4 day drive. 5am the following morning we were up for our 3 day tour of ayers rock, kings canyon and the olgas..all were pretty cool, although was disappointed to not be able to climb up ayers rock due to the wind. sleeping in swags when it was 4 degrees at night was an interesting experience also! it was surprisingly cool the whole time we were in alice springs and ayers rock..not what i expected from "the red centre" - as i keep being told though it is winter here! having gotten up at 5am 3 days in a row, i was shattered.. we ate with the tour group at the hostel after the tour finished and had couple of drinks, but by 9 everyone was falling asleep! i was flying out of alice to cairns the following afternoon, spo wantered round alice for few hours- ended up havinga didgeridoo lesson in a theatre i wandered into and then left for the airport..ryan was flying to cairns with me and graeme and caroline flying to melbourne since they are leaving australia on friday..arriving 5minutes late for check in they had to stay buy another flight for the following day and were not happy! luckily the flight to cairns was later so we were there in plenty of time..here i said goodbye to graeme and caroline, and after a night in cairns said goodby to ryan too..i am now up in port douglas on my own as i was at the start of my trip- its kinda scary as you have to start over meeting people again, but i'm sure in a couple of days i'll have settled here - today is a job hunting day..although its sunny out so i may well just head to the beach! hope all is well at home! laura xx p.s. i'll put a few pics up now, but internet time almost over..more will follow soon x
