I love Thailand!! Firstly let me catch up from last time I blogged.
On Easter Sunday we did a bit of sunbathing in a park near us, then later on went to get some food nearby. We got some dumplings and noodles. Thought I was playing it safe with the noodles and then they dumped some big tentacles and what looked like an eye in it. Cheers! Tried the noodles but it was far too fishy! Looked like I was going hungry again! We got the ferry over to Hong Kong again to watch the light show on the skyscrapers. It was pretty rubbish! We then skyped over to my parents and grandparents. The sound wasn't great but it was nice to see them and they got to see me. It was upsetting as well though, I do really miss everyone!! We went back on the ferry and got a pot noodle thing to eat.
On Monday we were up early to get the bus to the airport for our flight to Bangkok. As soon as we stepped off the plane the heat was something else! We had looked online where it said there were thunderstorms every day all week as it is the rainy season but there wasn't a drop of rain in sight. It was unbearable! We had a quick meal in the airport and it was easily the best thing I'd eaten in a long time. It was chicken with cashew nuts, chillis and a garlic/soy sauce. Ben had a beef dish and he was sweating a lot from the spice, it makes me laugh so much! He sweats at Nando's spice so with the chilli used here I may be amused quite regularly! A young man came talking to us whilst buying our metro tickets as he thought we were struggling. I automatically get suspicious but he translated something in Thai to someone who worked there to help us and then said he was going the same way and showed us to the platform. We had some basic chit chat, he told us about a public holiday coming up and where the King will be and where to go then got off at his stop with a handshake. Very friendly. We got to the hostel easily and it is simple but clean. We have to take our shoes off coming in, like many places in Thailand but I don't really like it! Last night it made me smudge my nail varnish! And also as we are sharing a bathroom, do they expect me to not wear shoes in there? I don't think so! Just before we went out the thunderstorms started. It absolutely bucketed it down so we just went a couple of doors down to a local restaurant. I had Thai green curry which I'd been looking forward to a lot! Ben had a noodle dish and we also got some prawn crackers with a chilli paste dip. I never saw any prawn crackers in China but these didn't disappoint and were the real deal! The curry was also how it is really supposed to taste as opposed to back home. It was delicious, pretty spicy though! I don't think Ben sweated at this meal! We had some lovely cold Chang beer as well. Ben jumped at one point as something brushed his leg, he thought it was a rat but it was the tiniest kitten. There were 3 really small ones with their mum that lived there and they were just playing so were quite entertaining. The campest waiter ever who was serving us kept trying to offload a kitten on us.
Today we enjoyed the free toast on offer at the hostel and headed towards Chinatown. We went to a couple of temples and a French woman stopped us saying that her and her husband were attacked this morning and some locals took their belongings. Her husband had grabbed one of them and managed to push him over but he'd hit his head on the pavement, had to go to hospital and now her husband was in jail. Obviously she wanted money. Pretty sure it was a scam but I'd expect it more off a local than a French woman. Whilst looking at the 2nd temple a man that had been sat by the entrance gate asked us where we were from and started chatting about places to go. He was trying to make us go to a tourist place to book some hotels for the different places we are planning to go to so I'm guessing he'd get some kind of commission. He wrote the name down for us and then when we said we would have a look later, he just scribbled the name out!! We said we were walking through Chinatown and he said it would all be closed, opening again at 5pm and that a Chinese gang ran the area so it wasn't safe in the day!! We carried on walking that way anyway and nothing was closed, nor did I see any type of gang. He obviously just really wanted us to go to that office!
We ate some noodles for lunch and tonight we're going to eat on the famous traveller haunt of Khao San Road (or nearby) where we will meet my friend Hollie and her boyfriend Sam later on. United kick off at 1.45am as well so I don't know if we'll try and catch it there. There is an official United bar and restaurant in Bangkok but that probably means expensive! Or failing that try to find a website on our phones from the hostel.
P.s. The location should say Bangkok!
