Any country would have a terrible job following on after Fiji, but do you what would have helped? A little bit of sun New Zealand! Sort it out! As we stepped outside the airport in Christchurch my heart nearly stopped at the shock of the cold. A guy behind us in similar attire of shorts, tshirt and flip flops swore loudly on feeling the cold and I knew how he felt.
We arrived on the last day that the main shopping street was open to the public. The said street is a closed off ghost town of shops either knocked down or well on their way to demolition due to the last big earthquake in February. The warning sign on entering the zone didn't exactly help that if another earthquake occurred whilst we were in that zone 'we might not survive'. Nice. It was both sad but incredibly interesting taking in the devastation. Apparently there have been 8,000 aftershocks since February. Part of me would like to be in a very minor earthquake. After being in the shower during one when I was in California and not knowing anything about it until hearing the excitement when I exited the bathroom, I've always had a curiousity. But no way would I want to witness anything remotely big after seeing what damage it does.
Anyway, the rest of our stay in Christchurch has been spent mainly in bed. We're lazy after Fiji and it did tire us out a little with the lack of sleep. We're staying out by the beach and have just about managed a little stroll near the pier.
We fly to Auckland tomorrow and Christmas awaits. My Christmas list to Ben consists of a good selection of cheese, hairspray, lip gloss, some nice chocolate and a magazine. How I've changed.
I'm looking forward to staying in our studio flat over Christmas (24-27th) away from the dorms and getting a tv and DVD player and the Christmas meal we've booked should be a nice treat. After that I don't really know what's going on. Ben's cousin is getting married on Wahiki island and his Dad will be coming over. So we'll be on the island for a few days but I don't know what we're doing for new year or after that. We fly home from Auckland so we need to get back to the south island, either flying there and driving back up or driving down and flying back to Auckland nearer the time.
Merry Christmas everyone!!!! X
