This is once again back to the memorial stupa, the place where ashes of ancestors are usually kept. What is so special and macabre about the stupa at Cheung Ek, though, is that it contains the skulls and large bones of the 9000 victims that were found at Cheung Ek. The skulls were carefully examined in order to determine the victims' age, gender and cause of death and then sorted into one of the 9 shelves in the stupa depending on their categorization. What is most horrible about seeing all this death in one place is the realization that Cheung Ek is only one of hundreds of similar killing fields all over Cambodia, and the 9000 on display here is only a fraction of the between 1.7-3 million people that were murdered by the Khmer Rogue.
