Travelled from La Paz, the highest capital city in the world at nearly 4000m (13,120ft) above sea level to Uyuni where we spent 3 days exploring the stunning landscapes between Salar de Uyuni adn Chilie´s Atacama Desert in 4x4´s. The first stop was the salt flats which had recently been flooded, so we could only spend a limited time there and not stay in the salt hotel as originially planned. But the piercing blue sky contrasting with the blinding white salt is stunning and great for taking some perspective photos. The entire excursion was breathtaking, the saltbed surrounded by golden-hued mountains, snow capped peaks and endless azure horizons. St 14000ft we saw Laguna Colorada, the large red lagoon with flamingo´s. Then at 16,400ft Laguna Verde, a blue-green lake so coloured because of it´s high concentrations of lead, sulphur, copper and other minerals. We also saw geysers, boiling mud pools, and thermal baths. We stayed in hostels in the desert where the stars and moon were like nothing I had ever seen before.
On the second night I went with our Guide Pepe to try and get some water from a shop which doubled up as a bar. The bar had a few drunken westerners in it and we fought our way to the shop keeper/bar tender and asked for litre of water. He produced a bottle and then showed concern that the seal had broken, so he got an old rusty tin mug from under the counter and poured a small amount in and took a sip. Then Pepe tried it and said, no water here... the bottle was filled with neat alcohol. Good job we tried before we buy
I loved the excursion, the scenery was so unusual. The mountains were colourful and we climbed on rocks that were like no others I had seen.
