Day zero. I'm off!
This trip has been a long time in the planning and an even longer time gestating in my mind.
Yet, having been floored by a mystery bug (now suspected to have been a reaction to a yellow fever vaccination) for the past month, I leave almost entirely unprepared. It wasn't until Thursday that I was actually confident I wasn't going to be calling Qantas to cancel the whole thing and instead flying down to Melbourne to convalesce.
Rarely accused of being laid back, I promised myself many months ago that I would make an effort to be calm in any of the many sticky situations I could find myself in overseas and to roll with whatever punches international travel throws at me. I wasn't quite mentally prepared for that to kick in before I actually left - so I dropped my bundle a bit last week when the whole thing looked like it might fall apart.
But here I am, suddenly standing on the precipice, feeling a little like the pirate's hostage given a cutlass prod in the back and nudged along the plank.
I trust in my smarts and my ability to handle situations. Though both are currently out of practice in a big bad world context, I reckon it'll come back to me.
Besides, how hard can Hawaii be... in business class?
Sydney, the last six and a half years have been swell.
Now let's get this show on the road!
