Oh Paris!! We arrived in Paris on Monday afternoon, and thanks to my Penn State tuition money, we were staying in the ghetto. It wasn't too bad, but we had to take the metro everywhere, even if we wanted to just go out to dinner. That was kind of stinky. After settling in to the hotel we visited Parc Vilette. Its pretty cool, as you will see in my fantastic photographs. Its big, and was considered avante garde for the time. It currently contains a small amusement park for little kids, a canal, some wooded areas, an outdoor theater, and a science museum. Some weird elements are randomly found throughout the park. Like flashing green lights at night, or when you are walking through the woods you hear space age music. Kind of odd if you ask me, but interesting. That night, we headed to a delicious French restaurant, whos name I can't recall right now but I have a business card. We did a fixed menu, and I got escargot and beef bourgonion (sp?). It was delicious, for desert two friend and I decided to split our deserts into thirds so we can have some of each! Best idea ever. There was apple tart, creme brulee, and profiteroles.
On our second day in Paris we took the train out to Versailles. It was pretty cool. Sadly it was November and there wasn't really anything blooming, but it was still impressive. Its sheer scale is kind of amazing. My favorite part was Marie Antoinette's Palace and gardens. The house was kind of something you'd expect, but she had really elaborate gardens. She was a bit of a loon, and had a whole area that was built kind of like the Shire in Lord of the Rings, that was kind of just her "play area" on one really lived there. There were tons of ducks, swans, and farm animals (cows, goats, horses, sheep, chickens, donkeys), as well as a bunny rabbit pen. Of course my favorite part of Versailles would be the animal part haha.
The next day we had a big walk. Saw another park, Notre Dame, Sainte Chappelle, The Louvre and the gardens there, Champs de Elysee, Arc de Triomph, and the Eiffel Tower. Very busy!! We had time to stop in at Angelinas for some hot chocolate (delicious!). This was also the day we found out that Barack Obama is our president-elect! The french were very excited, and all day long people would come up to us and say "Obama! Obama!" It was kind of crazy to see how much the rest of the world was involved in our own election. I guess when your stuck in your own country you don't realize how much the common-folk of the rest of the world are watching.
