We arrived at Wellington on the 3rd of July after a brief journey from the Picton Harbor in the South. We were instantly surprised at the fact that the North Island actually seemed populated! (Agreed we had
Only just arrived- and it was NZ's Capital country) but the swanky looking high rise buildings and fashionable young people reminded us distinctly of a smaller London! However we realised shortly after
Walking from one end of the city to the other in 15 mins that that was basically where the similarities ended, even though it was the capital of the country it was still a small city- but it still had plenty to see! We met up with Aruns friend Austin later on that day, and we went on a brief tour of the city- starting at the harbor, which luckily was nice and sunny (a pleasant break from the South). The Harbor
Was surrounded by beautiful walkways decorated with driftwood and some cool sculptures which ran pretty much into the centre of town- there was a museum which we briefly visited on our way into the center.
We also saw the hub of NZ's politics the 'Beehive' (parliamentary building) which was surrounded by high rise law firms and a beautiful white marble parliamentary house. We also visited the home of the All
Black's team at the 'Cake tin' an impressive stadium that surprising looked exactly like a cake tin! After dumping our van (thankfully) we moved into Austin's house, which he and his brother lived in- and
unfortunately seemed to take up most of the space, luckily NZ's are very easy going people! That night with a few of Austin's Uni mates we went to an Irish pub in the centre of Wellington for couple of drinks before retiring for a more spacious night's sleep! The next day we walked around Wellington some more, seeing Victoria uni which was in North Wellington and doing some important repairs on our van (fixing the busted speakers- for our sanity!)- having a nice relaxed day with not much driving was a nice break from the mileage we managed to do in the South! That evening we met up with a group of Uni goers and went to one of the halls of residence to start another night out in Wellington- picking up random people and making some cool new kiwi mates we hit the town, unfortunately ending up in an 80's club (with some pretty retro dancing) and crawling in about half 4 in the morning, so a good night was had by all! The 3rd day in Wellington was more of a recovery luckily Austin had a DVD player and the full works of 'black books' so we wasted a few hours watching that!- that evening again our new friends popped round and we watched some TV with a few beers and card games, an accurate introduction into student living! We left Wellington on the 6th for our adventures up North; our next stop would be Hawkes bay- A bay situated on the East coast of the North Island!
