Our second night in Bangkok, staying in the fabulous Penisular Hotel. A jaw dropping Oasis of calm with city views from the 31 st floor.
An intense day of sightseeing with our private guide Dew, enabled us to navigate the city on a variety of modes of transport, water taxi, yuk yuk, Skytrain. The temples and Grand Palace, while busy were put into context for us by Dew and we learnt loads about Buddhism, the contribution of the Royal Family both in the past and their contribution in recent times. Lots of preparations underway for the forthcoming coronation. The afternoon showed us Street life in China town, little India and the stunning flower markets where Dew bought me a jasmine and rose welcome garland and gave us a flower arranging lesson showing us how to display the lotus flower to best effect. Lunch was in a market “canteen” food was tasty and plentiful. High Tea was in a tea house of historical fame where we enjoyed iced Thai tea in a plastic bag with straw sitting in a plastic bucket, very refreshing! A good 8 hours of intense sightseeing left us worn out and it was tempting to nap but after shower we decided to find the stunning pool for an hour or so before a riverside terrace dinner.
The service in this hotel is the best we have ever enjoyed however the prices for wine are eye watering so a dry martini and local beer was no hardship!
On our first day in Bangkok we enjoyed a small dinner cruise, not one of the party boats but a small food focused boat that showed us the nighttime sights from the river.
We arrived just before the recent increase in tension in Parkistan / India with airspace being closed, think we were lucky as loads of flights cancelled.
