So I've made it to India. I tell you what, it's one crazy place! We arrived at about 10.30 on Wednesday morning. It was really exciting, but I felt a little nervous about it too. We lined up for our luggage and I felt releived when all my bags came out. Thank god. Every thing was so new and exciting. So we left the airport and were greeted by a man with a paper sign with our names on it, written in texta. We left the airport and there were people everywhere. The men were staring at us, looking at us like we were exotic creatures haha. It was really dusty, and to me seemed so old fashioned. There were vehicles everywhere, crammed up in a kaotic fashion. Our escort turned to me and said, "First time to India?" with a grin on his face. I laughed and said yes. He then went to put all of our bags into the boot of his small car. It was a tight squeeze. There were five of us there and only four extra seats, so I spent my first car ride in India sprawled across three other bodies in the back of the car.
We stopped in the traffic and a girl came up to the window, she would have been about six or seven, and she stood there begging for money in her rags for clothing. We'd been in India for literally five minutes and the poverty was noticable everywhere. So after an eventful ride, we made it to our hotel - YMCA New Delhi. We sat down for an Indian curry for lunch at YMCA after being greeted by Rekha, our go to person in India. She's really lovely.
After lunch we decided to set out as a group and explore Delhi. We had our first auto-rickshaw ride after I organised for us to pay 5 ruppees to get to the "good shops". (40 ruppees to an Aussie dollar). So we were taken to a shop and found out that we'd been taken for a ride because the auto driver would be tipped if we bought clothing from the shops. This happened to us twice before we realised we were just losing our money to these crazy drivers. The streets were so intense - people everywhere - school children pointing and laughing, men staring at us, people selling food, roses and clothing on the streets. There were stray dogs lying in gutters and beggars with missing limbs reaching out for a few ruppees. It's a shocking place.
We all made it back to YMCA, exhausted and overwhelmed by it all, and sat down for another curry - just a slight variation on lunch haha. Headed off to bed early that night, and even though the bed was slightly damp and rock hard, I had a pretty good nights sleep.
And that was just day one.
