hi! its been a long time... mainly because im a miser and resent having to pay to use the internet!!! well i'll catch up now....
so today is our final day in rotorua. it really does smell as badly as they say, and it comes in wafts so u cant really get used to it. anyway weve been here for a little while now so kind of got used to the city which is pretty nice actually. weve been doing a lot of adventure activities here too, white water rafting was probably my favourite, going down a 7m waterfall after no experience at all is quite an achievement i think, but zorbing was also awesome (see annas blog for pics as im not going t repeat them). we also went t a cultural evening in a maori village which was a lot of fun, and we had a hangi which is where they cook the whole meal on hot rocks underground, yes we ate as much as was humanly possible...we are being backpackers after all...
before this we were in mercury bay which was my favourite spot so far...we were here for my birthday and went sea kayaking and saw a couple of stingrays. cathedral cove was the most beautiful spot ive seen so far on the trip, if i was to move to nz it would be to here...the kiwi lifestyle is so outdoorsy and though i never considered myself sporty in the least i can really see the appeal. id love to live by the beach now. am definately going t try surfing when i get to surfers paradise!
i dont think ive even written about paihia yet? we went here after auckland (which i realise ive been spelling wrong throughout the blog). here we went to see the waitangi treaty grounds, where the maori signed a treaty which in essence basically let the british do what they liked in nz, but its also recognised as the uniting of the people and 'the birthplace of the nation'. its waitangi day tomorrow and we will be in waitomo, shame we couldnt be in waitangi but it wouldve thrown everything out in terms of time. whilst in paihia we also went to cape reigna, the northern most tip of the country which again was absolutely beautiful and here we did dune surfing which was loads of fun. we went on a tortuous bike ride to the Haruru waterfalls and kayaked and swam to an island in the bay where we saw oyster catchers.
as i said were off to waitomo tomorrow which should be really interesting and then lake taupo. but for now im going to attempt to put some pics on this blog...here goes...
