Soz no pics again - who knows when Im gunna get to an internet place where they let u do it!!
Leaving Rainbow Beach in couple of hours to head to Hervey Bay for my Fraser Island trip! On the way here we stopped near the beach for an aboriginal informative talk! Learnt that didgeridoos are made using special eucalyptus trees found only in north oz and that termite hollow them out. Originally only men were allowed to play them as they were seen as phallic symbols so it was thought they would get the women pregnant! I had a go at playing one, made some funny raspberry sounds but that was about it - harder than it looks!! Next we learnt about spear throwing and also which plants/trees the aborginals used to eat / drink from. Then we moved onto boomerangs and their different sizes/shapes dependant on what they were used for (hunting, killing, returning etc). We had a go at throwing the returning boomerang, used to scare birds, roos and other animals from their hiding places, didnt do very well at the throwing, never came back anyway!! Might have to get myself one to practise! On the beach we learnt where the name 'Rainbow Beach' came from, another aboriginal story .... once their was a beautiful maiden who drank from the river and the rainbow god fell in love with her and would watch her from the skies. One day a warrior decided he wanted the maiden for himself and tried to take her away against her will, as she ran away down the beach she shouted for help and the warrior, angry that she had ran away through a killing boomerang towards her. The rainbow god heard her cry for help and flew down to help her, as the boomerang struck him his colourful soul shattered and sunk into the sands, lovely story eh!?
At night me and two of the girls from my bus went up to see the 'Sand-Blow', it was so amazing, the largest sand dunes I have ever seen and it looked like a huge sea of sand, never seen anything like it. We went at the perfect time, just before sunset, there was a guy there who does paragliding so he told us the good viewpoints to go to. The views were breathtaking and the colours of the sand were amazing, i doubt the pics will do it any justice, felt like being in another world let alone on the other side of it!
Today up early for free pancakes mmmm then headed down to beach where got way too sandy!! So just waiting for bus now them I'm off! Rainbow Beach is a nice little place to stop if u've got a spare day, nothing here though really apart from the beach. A lot of people go to Fraser Island straight from here too which is quicker and cheaper than going from Hervey Bay so bear that in mind (but get ur food n stuff before cos it is really expensive here and only a few shops)
Keep in touch everyone!
