We left from Rotorua pretty early and stopped off at some hot thermal mud pools where we were given a guided tour. This place smelt awful because of the sulphur coming out of the pools, basically smelt of rotten egg. After walking around there for a couple of hours it was time to hit the road ready to arrive in Taupo and our SKYDIVE!! We were both in the first group to skydive and after arriving at the centre I think we were both getting a little nervous. Amy was in the first plane so she got kitted up and then it was time for me. She seemed to be up there ages before I saw her floating down in her parachute. She was buzzing when she landed and it got me even more excited. I met my instructor called Chris and he reassured me that everything was going to be fine. At this point i was still feeling pretty excited just small butterflies. We got in the plane and I was sat opposite Jake who was smiling all the way up which made me a lot more relaxed. We were flying up for about 20 minutes before anything happened and then suddenly we were 12,000ft up and the door flew open, 2 seconds later and Jake just seemed to dissappear. It was this point that i got REALLY scared and started to make strange noises. But Chris scooched me across to the door, let me legs hang over the edge, head back, hands on my straps and that was it. I was then just falling and tumbling and falling, whilst screaming of course!! It was one of the most surreal feelings I have ever experienced!! After 45s of free falling we were gliding of the lake with the parachute, I even got a chance to steer, before floating to the ground! Definitely 5 minutes of my life I will never forget!
After our skyive, it was time to visit the doctor for Amy's boils that seemed to be taking over her body. A couple of hours later and a prescription of anit-biotics and it was time to get ready for our night out! We had a great night out down in the hostel bar, starting with a game of bingo which me and Amy won the first round of, and a jug of beer to ourselves. Lots of dancing and singing then took place for the rest of the night not forgetting me being a little silly and trying to put this lad off taking a shot in pool by putting my face right by the pocket. This resulted in the ball smacking me straight under my eye in my cheek. Hilarious to think about now, but at the time I felt the swelling start straight away so I ran to the bar to grab some ice and a tea towel which I wore for the remainder of the night! I woke up with no black eye though, so must have worked!
The next day we spent chilling at Lake Taupo (very very cold water) and went to a pub quiz in the evening with all our friends, where it was proven that we are quite a clever bunch as we came 3rd!! Then it was time for bed after packing our rucksacks up ready to leave Taupo in the morning heading for River Valley.
Taupo was so much fun and the group of friends we have made so far are amazing!
Lots of love Meg and Amy xxxx
