Sat 9/6
Our train arrived in about 7:30am. Got a much better sleep than expected. We had a transfer to our hostel to save hassle. Our hostel was a lovely courtyard hostel, the dorm room was nice and spacious compared to the last hostel, and no bunk beds! Bonus! After breakfast we went out to explore the town. It was lovely and peaceful compared to Beijing. You could spend hours wandering among all the streets and alleyways. Its the China you imagine before you come here with red lanterns hanging in the streets. It was even more beautiful at night when all the lights came on. Even the gates and towers were light up with lights. Stopped off at a bar for a drink before going home to bed, after ordering we thought the vodka was terribly expensive, until it arrived, it was huge! I ended up sharing it out into three glasses to make it drinkable! Saved going up to order more!lol.
Sun 10/6 (Today)
Last day in Pingyao so booked a tour to see Wangs Family Courtyard and Zhangbi Underground Castle. We went to the wang family courtyards first. It was a great place to explore but got very repetitive, the 123 courtyards were all very similar. Next we went to the underground castle, we hired a guide as it was advised so we didn't get lost. I think it would have been much more fun to go exploring on our own. It was built as a defence tunnel (not really a castle) which never got used. The top level of tunnels were destroyed when the villagers built there houses (they were only 2m underground) but we went down into the other two levels. A bit like a mud version of the tunnels in Hoy but 10 times bigger!lol. Spending the rest of the evening relaxing before another overnight train at 9:30pm. Next stop xi'an.
