Waitomo Caves, Taupo and Wellington
25th March – 1st April 09
We leave Rotorua and head towards this park just outside, Me and ellen have a ride on a Agro-Jet and have a wonder about this random little farm – sit on a tractor and a massive border collie!
We leave here and end up driving to Waitomo Caves, to do black water rafting and see the Glow worms (Found out that they are actually just big maggots with poo that glows, they then turn into flys with no mouth or digestive system, mate and then die!)
We leave Waitomo but first head towards an Angora Rabbit shearing place – funniest/weirdest thing I have seen in a long time, they have to shear these rabbits or they will die coz their fur is so thick! This woman ended up tying this rabbit up to this table stretched him out and started to shave him – will load the pics really funny!
We leave here and head to TAUPO.
Got to Taupo and the bus broke down DOH! But we got to see the Huka Falls and played poo sticks. (didn’t win ). We get up the following day at 6am and head toward the Tongariro Crossing (this is where Mt Doom is from ‘Lord of the Rings’. We had to climb the devils staircase (which was nasty) the views were amazing – we were above the clouds. We had to climb up some more mountains – these were so steep I thought I was going to get blown off at one point – didn’t like this part of the climb we got to the top and obviously there was only one way down – but as I got to the top, I looked down and saw 3 amazing emerald lakes. AMAZING – the colour of them was incredible! The end of the hike got rather flat and a bit dull after seeing these lakes there was just trees – but still the views of Taupo were beautiful! This hike took us 6/7 hours in all, but was definitely worth it!
The following day we headed to the natural hot pools on the Waikato river, it was like sitting in a bath just what we needed after a day of tramping! Then headed back into Taupo and had a potato top pie and climbed the Mac Donald’s airplane! What a giggle that was…
We get to Wellington (30th March) what a cool city – this is the capital of NZ. Me Kate Dale and Ellen wondered about and then took the cable car up to the top of this massive hill where the university was, view was fanstatic – we stayed up here all day – Ellen kindly serenaded us with her singing of Paolo Nutini and Dirty Dancing songs and then Firemen came up to check the Hydrants and they gave us a quick tour of their truck…didn’t realize the trucks are so complex! We met up with loads of people on our bus later that night and played my first game of ring of fire! Don’t remember much after that… The following day consisted of a curry while watching Top Gun (we love you tom!) and The Pink Panther.
We leave Wellington on the 1st April and head towards the South Island by ferry and head towards Picton.
