After a good night's sleep interrupted by early construction I left Guatemala on a shuttle to Antigua that left half an hour early - Latin America continues to surprise me!
A short 1 hour journey took me to the beatiful city of Antigua. It was the nation's capital until an earthquake in 1776 forced a move to Guatemala City. However not everyone went meaning the city developed around the ruins of the convents and churches but never reached the same heights again. What is left is a stunning colonial town with amazing ruins to explore at marvel at the size and number of religious buildings.
I checked into my hostel and had a walk around town and the first of many ruins - Santa Clara convent. I decided to stay out an check out the local Welsh bar - I was the only Welsh person it it but the decor gave a strong indictation of the owners origin.
Next day involved more walking around enjoying a Mexican lunhc watching some of the Euros before retreating to my hostel in the rainy afternoon.
My final full day in Antigua was a busy one as I realised that other than walking around I hadn't really done that much there! I headed to Cerro del Cruz for a great view over the city towards one of the many volcanos then visited another convent, the current and ruined cathedral and a final convent! The current cathedral occupies a wing of the original catherdral and the ruins behind hint at the massive structure it used to be.
The next dat I should have been on an early shuttle but as I have found often happens here the time was changed to noon so I hung out with some of the 5 hostal cats but not the rabbit as I was not speaking to him after he had bitten through my USB charging cable! I did have another walk around - Antigua is a great city just to enjoy - safe, friendly and beautiful.
Once the shuttle arrived it was off to San Pedro on Lake Atitlan.
