Hello there from Sunny sunny laos. We took a flight from Kunming to a place called Jinghong, which was a really different town to anywhere we had visited in china. it was a lot smaller, and you could see people faces changing as we got further to the border of other countries. we didnt have long in Jinghong, just one evening and the whole group went out for a meal to the local night market where we basically chose kebabs of food off a stall to be grilled and it was all really fresh and lovely.
the next day we set of at 9 to the next town which was a place called Mengla. we got there about 2 oclock and headed out for lunch. we arent really sure what the point of us going to this place was, other than the fact it was close to the Laos border. there wasnt anything in this town, it was really quite boring. we got some lunch and had a walk round the town to try and find anything but failed. so in the end we just sat on this nice balcony at the back of our hotel overlooking a river and chilled out. in the evening we had a nice meal at the hotel with the group and enjoyed our last night in china by eating cheap good food and getting attacked by millions of bugs, some of which we enjoyed zapping before we got into a strict buddhist country!
This morning we headed off at 8 oclock to the laos border. we got through really quickly then had a drive to the town we are staying in. from what i saw of the drive (when i wasnt asleep) it was absoloutley beautiful scenery with lush green trees everywhere and feilds and little huts. very different from china! we checked into our hotel and headed for some food with the group. we found a great little restaurant and darren got to try out his thai as the thai and lao language is 90% the same. so we had a lovely meal with no suprises! we sat around after drinking beer lao and eating banana pancakes, it was lovely! have a bit of a headache now though! after that we went to an outdoor adventure place and 8 of us have booked ourselves onto a kayaking trip down the river for tomorrow which i am really really looking forward to!
its great to be in Laos. you can feel the difference from china, everything seems so much more chilled out. although we havent travelled that far from china into laos its amazing how different it is, just crossing the border. i love it! and so far they seem to have western toilets which is great, i officially hate squat toilets! after spending a month in sri lanka with mainly western toilets, it was quite a shock experiencing all the squats in china, even in one of our hotels! they just dont seem to have developed when it comes to toilets and its really weird as they will have posh toilets that have automatic sensors to wash your hands, yet they will be squats! im also glad to get away from the spitting in china as well. oh my god it was disgusting!!! you could hardly walk 20 foot down the street without someone hocking up thier flegm, it was foul!!!! in a way i am glad to get to the relaxedness and smallness of laos.
