Getting into Vietnam was much more of a hassle than one might imagine. Considering I had got all the necessary things online to be able to just pick up a visa on my arrival at the airport it still took hours for me to be able to get through and out. Eventually got to the hostel I had booked to be told they didn't have my booking and basically they couldnt care less. I managed to find a cheap hotel where I was able to share a cheap triple room with the 2 guys Id shared a taxi with from the airport.
In the morning moved to the original hostel, though the lady that runs the place was still pretty scary first thing in the morning.
I ended up staying in Ho Chi Minh longer than I had expected as tet is on the 3rd, so a lot of things in the country shut over this time. However, this meant that I had a lot of time to see heaps of the city, and I celebrated tet there. It wasn't nearly as big or crazy as I had thought it might be as it really is much more of a family affair. However, we did get to watch some fireworks that were obstructed by a huge building.
Overall, liked the city alot and it was as big and busy as I had been expecting, although apparently it was pretty quiet when i was there due to tet.
