We headed down from San Cristobal to the market city of Oaxaca to do some trinket and handicraft shopping but it turned out they were all pretty pants. Nevertheless the city itself was very nice with several large plazas and a "festival of lights" in the evenings allowing us to indulge in popcorn and candyfloss. The town also seems to have a penchant for skeletons, prehaps a hangover from the day of the dead a few weeks ago, with virtually every shop containing at least one member of the undead. After a couple of days we started to feel restless though and decided to head down to the coast for our last couple of beaches of the year. We first went to Puerto Angel, a pretty little harbour town and charmingly lacking in mosquitoes. We planned to spend a relaxing couple of days doing absolutely nothing until we discovered to our complete amazement that Nationwide had put a block on our credit cards for the FOURTH time! It's so unbelievable it's almost funny...but its not because they're the scum of the earth. Anyway after sorting that out we decided to go a mile down the coast to Zipolite, an even more remote and therefore even more stress free place. Hah! The place was lovely: beautiful golden sands, clear blue sea, almost deserted, and a nice little beachside cabin to stay in. However, we came back to the room on the second day to see that the maid had been in to make the bed. How nice we thought. We then opened the wallet we'd left on the bedside table to discover that while it still had a bit of money in it it was missing a heafty 2000 pesos. That's 100 pounds! And we couldn't even prove it was her as the wallet was still there and the management were saying "oh, but we trust her with our children...maybe you spent it elsewhere...". There was nowhere else to spend it and it's impossible to spend that much that quickly out here without buying a car or something! The evil maid looked guilty as sin as well. A whole year away and we get robbed in the last two weeks! grrr...
