So this is our last blog entry, as we headed to our FINAL destination of Bangkok on 18th August.
Stayed in apartments across the river from the centre, so a little out the way but very cheap, and they had a huge pool, tennis courts and a gym (3 days to work off 6 months of holiday eating, yikes). Plus, when a taxi to the centre was never more than £1.50 we couldn't really complain.
The next morning we headed for the massive weekend market to finally buy some souvenirs, as now we didn't have to worry about lugging them about everywhere. Enormous place -- despite there being an official market map we still got lost amongst the hustle & bustle. Talk about a shoppers paradise!
Later we made ourselves look fancy (well, as fancy as we could look with clothes that have been crumpled, dirtied and often damp for 6 months. But you know, we tried our best) and headed up to the famous Sky bar on the 64th floor of the State tower for sunset. Drinks were extortionate as you'd expect but we got the cheapest drink available- beer - and nursed them for as long as possible. It was cloudy so no sunset unfortunately, but still amazing views of the city! Afterwards we headed down to the river for a dinner cruise, with lots of very tasty food and great views of the temples at night.
The next day we chilled by the pool in the morning then visited the Grand Palace - absolutely mesmerizing with all the colourful and gold temples glittering in the sun! Wow! We headed for backpacker central Khao San road for a few drinks and red curry, and walked for ages just absorbing the atmosphere on what was the last night of our trip.
Our flight wasn't until midnight the next day so we took full advantage of having a day left. Played tennis in the morning, chilled by the pool, ate lunch on the river, visited two more amazing temples- Wat Arun and Wat Po - and the National Assembly and even squeezed in a massage before heading to the airport.
Goodbye cheap delicious food, cheap massages, beautiful temples and sunshine. BUT, also goodbye to mosquitos, overwhelming humidity, undrinkable tap water and erratic moped drivers (just trying to be positive about leaving).
We arrived home in Edinburgh yesterday with somewhat mixed emotions. We just can't believe how fast the past 6 months have gone, but then we reflect on all the incredible sights we've seen and are amazed we successfully crammed it all in!
So after 6 months, 17 countries, and 22 modes of transport (yes, 22, and I can list them upon request for anyone who's sceptical), we made it home in one piece. It's been a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, and thank you so so much to everyone who helped us get there.
Now for a cup of tea and a scone :-)
