Finally got to Tanah Rata/Cameron Highlands. Bus journey from Penang took 8.5 hrs instead of 5. James v "upset" shall we say by the end. Forced to change buses several times. Shared the back seat of one coach, with no suspension at all, with numerous LARGE cockroaches and other insects. Ali was disgusted.
Bus moved at 10km/h for the last 50km up into the mountains. When James enquired as to why the reply was that the bus "might be broken". Bus finally did "break" 8kms from Tanah Rata and James went a bit mad. Driver not happy. James had big rant at Asia in general - left no stone unturned and refrained from insulting nobody in any way connected with Asia. Changed buses again. All of a sudden original "broken" bus began to work and it zoomed off, beating us to our destination (it was waiting for us at the bus station). More ranting from James.
Because we arrived so late everywhere was full and couldn't find anywhere to stay. Ended up in a basic (but clean, James did concede) room with no bathroom. Not a good time to introduce James to the joys of shared, Asian facilities - having not eaten ALL day because we left before breakfast and arrived at 7pm it did not go down well. More ranting.
Went out for meal. James fuming by now. Did eat well but did nothing to lift mood.
Back to room. James refused to shower. More ranting at Asian bathroom facilities and at Asia in general. Ali glad James went to sleep at 8.30pm (on hard bed). About 11.30pm James had MEGA tantrum (arms and legs flying) and vowed to book flight out of Asia first thing next morning.
Breakfast next morning James admitted slight overreaction having eaten some toast and cheered up. Everywhere still full. Forced to stay in same room again, though James promised no more tantrums. James forced to have shower because beginning to smell.
Booked tour for next day of the highlands, which will be v nice if the bus makes it. Gave every single piece of clothing we were not wearing to the "hotel" to be washed. Regretted giving them EVERYTHING as won't be back until tomorrow. James still wearing same t-shirt/shorts - 5th day in a row.
