With Koh Lanta being our only escape route out of Phuket we knew we were only going to
be here one night due to our tight schedule. Eager to make the most of it we got off the ferry and was attacked but a hord of tuk tuk drivers and hostel owners begging you to go with them. In the end we chose a lady that ran a hostel called home garden right on the beach. Arriving there in what can only be described as a motorbike sidecar we were pleased to see a good swimming pool and the beach right on the doorstep.
With our bellies crying out for attention the pool had to wait and we marched upstairs to the hotel restaurant overlooking the sea and filled up. Then we took off on our customary beach walk to have a look at the surrounding area.
Having walked the length of the beach we headed to the main road to find an ATM and a cheap tour operators that could take us on to Langkawi - a tropical island off the north west coast of Malaysia. Having reached the road, the dark clouds rolled in and once again the heavens opened. Stranded a good 15-20 minute walk from our hostel we accepted our fate and trudged back, soaking wet.
We later found out that Birdie and Danielle were also currently staying on Koh Lanta - which I guess explained the bad weather!!!!!
With the weather still bad we went back to our hostel restaurant that night for some dinner, trying their self-proclaimed 'infamous' spattie (a bizarre pasty like dish stuffed with your choice of vegetables and/or meat. It was actually really quite nice and worthy of its local fame.
That night we went to bed fairly early as we had a long journey ahead of us taking us from the the island on 2 car ferrys to the mainland, then a change of buses at Trang, then other change at the southern Thai ferry port town of Satun - where we swapped the wheels for propellers and boarded our boat into Malaysia the the Island of Langkawi.
Goodbye Thailand, Hello Malaysia... the next chapter.
