It amazes me how often I found myself thinking it would be great to turn around and head home after seeing a part of west Texas...thing is, I was in the middle of no where and had no choice but to get where I needed to be for the night. Don't get me wrong, the drive was rather enjoyable despite what everyone back home said it would be. Texas hill country is amazingly beautiful: plateaus of wind power generators, distant lightning storms and a sunset that has yet to be beat. I hope it doesn't get old; that would wear my nerves down.
I'm not sure how long the drive took, maybe 11 hours with a slight detour in San Antonio. I really loved the 80 mph speed limits, no need to worry about getting pulled over by the several State Troopers sitting on the side, I even followed one speeding Trooper for about 30 miles or so...? Along the way, several RadioLab podcasts and an album by Mumford & Sons kept me company.
My host tonight is a lovely couple in an adorable home. As soon as I was in, the greeting was wine, home-made margaritas and lots of fun conversation until my eyes couldn't stay open any longer which is good because I don't take well to a strange bed the first night.
Random thought...several friends of mine are all backpacking various parts of Europe right now, I'm the only one heading west. My host told me that if you want to see what man made, head east, but if you want to see what God made, head west. Nice thought to ponder while resting from the first part of this. Up next, Carlsbad Caverns.
And there'll come a time, you'll see, with no more tears.
And love will not break your heart, but dimiss your fears.
Get over your hill and see what you find there,
With grace in your heart and flowers in your hair.
