Well ths blog was going to be all about my week in the village and the last 4 days in kendwa but it has taken so long to upload it will be brief as y time is running out!
The week in Makunduchi was amazing,we had the best time staying with a really lovely family who loked after us very well. The conditions were very basic but it was a probably my best week out of the past 7 weeks! The hospital was bigger than I had expected it had a female ward, male ward, peds, labour ward,a single room and then a theatre with opporations once a week and an outpatient area which acted as a GP surgery. In the week we did a ward round for all the patients,a day i theatre,a child vaccination clinic and two general clinics. The majorty of cases were adults and children with maleria,it is so common over here-like having a cold in england!
In our spare time we vsited kisamkazi where we had a great afternoon seeing lots of dolphins, went to the local beach in Makunduchi (where our ride home was in an amulance),went on a spice tour which ended in buying lots of tea, coffee, spices and fruit and visited different parts of the village watching people at work! Very few people spoke english so we learnt a lot of swahili and put it to good use-although the last few days in kendwa everyone speaks english so I have forgotten most of what I learnt!
The place we are staying now is kendwa rocks,a hotel resort on the beach. We have a lovely coconut bungalow right on the sand with a hammock outside and air con inside-which is very much needed!
From here we visited Prison Island where we walked around the old prison which was never actuaaly used as a prison after it was built but instead as an isolation hospital for people coming in by boat from Asia and England years ago-if there was an infectious disease on board then the patient would be sent to the hospital and everyone else to this island for 14 days to check there were no more cases.
The island also has giant tortoises which are only here or on the seyshells island and are very old-some up to 185 years!we fed them leaves and took lots of photos (on catherines camera as mine broke that morning!)
Yesterday we went on a sunset cruise from the beach which was lovely-this is meant to be one of the most beautiful places in the world for sunsets and I can see why!
Today we have spent the day on the beach again, got henna tatoos and just relaxed after a hard 7 weeks working!
Plan from here onwards is going to stone town tomorrow where we will spend the night and get the 7am ferry back to Dar wednesday morning, giving us time to get our bags and get to the airport for the 7.40pm flight back to england!
