We visited Zimbabwe for a night to have high tea and cocktails at the iconic Victoria Falls Hotel which was built in the 1800s and full of old colonial memorabilia, it was like stepping back to a time when Englishmen would come to poach elephants and other wild animals in safari hats and sip gin and tonics on the veranda. We stayed at a backpackers called Shoestrings which was even lively on a Monday night, full of locals dancing away. We met a couple of lovely Irish girls who booked a flight to the town of Victoria Falls, located in Zimbabwe and thought they were going to Zambia. Only realising they were in the wrong country when they got in a taxi, asked to be taken to Jollyboys and told that its in Zambia and they were in Zimbabwe. Incidentally they were both blond and admitting feeling very dumb but were able to laugh it off and join the party. Coincidently the barmen Nash and Rodney two very alternative young Zimbabweans who were in a band also used to live down the road from me in Brixton and use to party at my local pub, the Hootananny where live Reggae and African music would be performed most nights.
