I spent my final night in Bangkok with the lovely, hospitable Dom Leslie, a Cadiz kid.
We went for drinks on top of the Marriott in what felt like the highest position in Bangkok, the sprawling city as far as the eye can see. We then went for what can only be described as a Thai banquet at an unassuming little place, plastic stools and kitchen basically on the street. The food was insanely good, fried fish with som tam, penang curry and blow your head off spicy larb topped of with friendly Thai waiters. Many beers later I headed home realising I only had four hours sleep if I was going to make my flight to Laos. Oops.
Next morning, tiny propellor driven plane to Luang Prabang and many conversations with the eclectic crowd of travellers.
Laos from the air is just incredible. Mountains and jungle, insanely beautiful apart from the sad, shorn areas of rainforest due to logging. Laos is covered in 10% original growth rainforest but this was closer to 75% 100 years ago. Nevertheless, it's so beautiful. Just wow.
Luang Prabang has my heart after two hours. A lovely, sleepy little town between two rivers, jungle and mountains you feel a sense of calm from the start. The people are so nice, kids riding on bikes stop to say hello, everyone all smiles. I'm sitting by the river eating som tam and drinking beer lao as I write. Paradise.
