I didn't have the best sleep. We had the whole 12 bed dorm to ourselves so most of us had bottom bunks, yay! I dislike climbing up on bunks alot, but I even more so really really really really dislike getting back down again, especially when you're half asleep! Anyway, mine was sooooo squeaky, everytime I moved! And I woke up freeeezing at one stage so I stole the blanket from not 1 but 2 spare beds!
This dorm provided cooking facilities but it was BYO food, except for pancake batter. So a few of us had big ole pancakes for breaky. I got a bit carried away with mine coz I didn't realise how much they expanded...oops...but I managed to eat it all. One thing I've learnt, when travelling never pass up free food! And it worked for me coz I didn't have to buy any lunch!
Anyway, we left the hostel at 8.30am and headed for the lake. JD went canoeing there in his free time yesterday and said it was so amazing that he really wanted to take us canoeing for an hour, and particularly as the only thing on today's agenda was a 7 hour drive.
As promised, JD took me with him and we took the esky of drinks too which he said would weigh us down and help with the balance. I was a little shaky and scared climbing into the front while it was half in the water...I'm not scared of shin deep water, hehe, but I had my camera in my pocket, and, well I'm clumsy...
Once we set off though, it was amazing!! I loved it!! There was dinner plate size turtles and huge fish in the water. It was only 9.30am but it was a gorgeous day, sunny and really hot. A few of the others swam in the water and swung off the rope swing.
While we waited for the swimmers to dry and change I did some squirrel watching. They were all in the trees there and they are fascinating little things. Some we saw earlier in the trip were quite tame but these ones were very timid. I did manage to put my stealth shoes on and got quite close to one. He was busy digging away for ages until he finally found a nut which he tucked into straight away.
We hit the road about midday and it was my turn to ride Shotgun up front with JD and be the music DJ. It was great fun - I got to subject everyone to my country music!
So the afternoon was spent covering some miles. We arrived at Lubbock around 9pm. We hadn't had dinner as there wasn't really any places to stop. We checked into our motel, double beds each again, yay!! Then we wandered over the road to Walmart to grab our own dinner. Nothing to do in Lubbock so we had an early night, around 10pm. Even the wifi in the hotel didn't work, bah humbug!
Later,
Tracey
