well, this is my second attempt at this entry, the first one was lost just as I was saving it, so excuse me if it's a little boring, but I'm bored of writing it!
So after the beautiful Cape Tribulation we breifly spent time at Mission beach at the Treehouse. This was probably my most favourite hostel so far, apart from Juggler's rest of course. It was essentialy a wooden shed in the rainforest. If I ever have the opportunity to build a house, it will resemble this place. We spent the entire time relaxing, juggling and swimming, oh and reading, lots of reading.
After we left the very relaxed Treehouse, we missioned to Townsville. Now Dave had his heart set on staying in Townsville as the Power Puff Girls also live in a place called Townsville. On arrival however it was an absolute dive so we skipped straight to the wonderful Magnetic Island.
After a short ferry ride and a very fun bus ride, we were at Bungalow Bay, our hostel. Bungalow Bay is actually a Koala santuary with the hostel tacked on the side and I can proudly say, we didn't see one Koala the whole time there! To be honest we weren't at all bothered. As we were checking in the receptionist tried to sell us a breakfast 'experience' where you have a full buffet and they bring round the animals for you to hold. My respone was "you're a bit weird round here arn't you." Having breakfast whilst holding a Koala is right up there with Ainsley Harroit, feet, beiong chased upstairs touching my temples! I love breakfast and am not a large fan of Koalas, they're quite honestly horrid little things.
So after declining her fine offer we sent up camp. Yes, we camped, Terrance came to play. Unfortuantley, as usual, I was in a bit of a mood, low sugar levels I'm syre, so Dave put up the tent while I stood there, much like a child after being refused the joy of icecream. I stomped off to explore and when I returned I found Dave talking to our next door neighbour, an interesting looking man, who can only be decribed as a scottish looking version of Bill Bailey. Angus is in fact not Scottish and although he now lives in the West country and is very funny, is originally from Surrey!
But the man can drink, so we drank, and drank. And after we'd drank and got bored, he took us to a pub down the road where we were the only people there and the land lord looked like he enjoyed beating people. We finished our drinks and left, quickly. Back to the hostel for a few more drinks, then sleep.
We woke up the next morning feeling a little worse for wears but decided to ignore it and catch the bus into town, where we aquired ourselves transport in the form of a Moke. Now for those who don't know, its pretty much a Mini with no doors! It was a purple California and his name was Cuthbert.
After a breakfast involving a mistake that was entirely our fault and a grumpy Aussie woman, we headed back to the camp site and parked the Moke in Angus doorway, time to get up!
We explored the whole island and then boght a picnic to eat at Picnic Bay, which we did and it was very nice. We then explored Radical beach, which turns out is a long way down a big hill and we were'nt allowed to take the Moke there so we had to walk. And although it was rather radical it wasn't worth the walk back up so we hitch hiked with a guy in a white yute which we would preceed to run into again. After that I think we got bored and hungery so we decided pizza was a good idea. Cue white yute man again! The pizza was rubbish but we had a laugh anyway.
The next day we went another walk, and once agin it turned out to be further than we thought. We parked the car at the bottom and decided to walk as far as the lookout. It was uphill and we didn't realise we missed the lookout until we were very much going down hill again. Fabulous views, but we were then on the other side of the island to the car. After a quick icecream we caught the bus back.
Now we were supposed to leave the next day but Angus had persuaded us to stay another night and go to the full moon party. So we did, and what a waste of time that was. We had to pay to go, it was at Base backpackers (not on the beach), the drink was really over priced and the music was crap! We made the most of it though and went home. The next morning was an early start to get the car back and catch the ferry.
We did venture into Townsville for an hour or so before catching the bus and our estimations were right, it was a hole!
Bring on Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays.
