Camp for night 8
30 K's short of kings canyon on the the merinnie loop.
Finally we got our s*** together and setup up camp in a relaxed fashion with plenty of time before dark and sat down and watched the sunset with a beer in hand! And by he'll do they taste great on nights like this!
Flies crazy but no sooner had the sun gone down the flies left. No insects either and a nice pleasant breeze on top of the lookout cooled the camp down nicely to make for a perfect evening.
So far this campsite takes the cake! We were originally thinking we would have to pay for camping and camp at the Kings Canyon camp ground as we rang the Rangers and asked and they basically said there were no free campsites near the Watarrka NP.
However, we just happen to pull in to Morris Pass lookout/ "Rest Area" where a sign said '24Hr camping overnight allowed'. This seemed to be the trend with most other rest areas shown on the map that we passed on this leg of the journey.
Dinner this night was marinated chicken steaks, baked spuds and a fresh salad!
We weren't lucky enough to have this rest area/campsite to ourselves, but it was big enough the the two other couples there did not disturb us or vice versa.
Once dinner was done we packed up all of camp except the chairs and the swag. This was so we could make an early start in the morning and not have to spend all morning packing up before heading to the canyon to start the rim walk!
