Huw's Bit
Woke to...forests of silver birch but more agriculture visible. Slept about 10hrs all up - very comfortable bed and cabin. Chrissie is sleeping like I've never seen before! Even door opening/closing in middle of night and the top bunk falling have not woken her when normally she'll wake up at a mouse fart!
Waiting for a message from Pete/David W about Origin III score! Chap from Brizzy is most up tight at not knowing!
Novosibirsk big, industrial and ugly from what we saw from train! After Novosibirsk landscape dominated by endless fields of wheat. Slowly developing a perspective on the size of things but still impossible to visualise.
Message from Oz: State of Origin Qld 12 NSW 10 - Gary next door is a happy chap!
Chrissie and I off out on the town tonight, well to the dining car! 2 carriages behind us! Can't wait, so excited! Serious case of cabin fever developing - had to resort to doing push ups to change things up a bit. Lesson for the day: charge the bloody Mac properly before you get on train!
Good night out! Had a steak which was clearly cooked in Chernobyl! Result: Gary has adapter so Mac charged - watched 'Jack Reacher' - verdict: absolute crap!
Christine's bit
Amazing how well one can sleep on a train but these bunks were super comfy with lovely warm donnas. Made our breakfast of rolls and ham and cheese, and fruit purchased from the supermarket before we left - its fun shopping when nothing is in English and the Cyrillic alphabet looks nothing like a letter you can recognIse!!
Spent the day listening to my audio book , chatting to our new friend Gary from Brisbane who was travelling on his own but had teamed up with a female teacher from Hong Kong, who had spent 2 months living in Adelaide and working at Scotch College (such a small world).
Lunch was bits and pieces left - biscuits and cheese peanuts, and strawberries I'd bought from a local woman who was selling them on the platform. Huw had another camping curry! We decided to get out of the cabin and go to the restaurant car for dinner. Gary had told us that the food was pretty basic and so we weren't expecting much, but my soup was really tasty and the pancakes with jam very good. Huw splashed out on a tough steak and chips!
Landscape has been vast forests of Silver Birch trees and miles of wheat fields with a number of major towns based around freight and the railway. People get on and off all the time - even in the middle of the night - Gary was saying he woke up in his cabin in the morning, and the previous person sharing had left in the middle of the night and there was someone new sleeping in the cabin and he heard nothing!
Went to sleep listening to my book and Huw managed to charge his laptop by borrowing an adapter from Gary, and watched a movie. Awoke at 4 am and prepared for departing the train at Ekaterinburg.
