We embarked on our self drive fraser island tour, where 11 of us squashed in to the back of a 4x4! Fraser is the largest sand island in the world, covered in rainforest, dunes and lakes. There were only 2 lads in our group and they started the trip by being macho and driving, however over the next few days they had it easy! There were 4 german girls, and 2 other brit girls. We all got on well but you can see the difference between the cultures straight away! Especially the eating habits.
We got to the island and drove to Lake B.....(can't remember the name) It took us a while as we went the wrong way, the other vans followed us too!haha It's a really beautiful lake, crystal clear water. We went for a dip and had a few games with our new friend Bobby the ball! We bought him especially for the trip =)
We headed to another lake - Boomanjn. This one was completely different, it's known as the tea coloured lake and that's exactly what it looked like! None of us fancied a dip in this one (especially as the tour operator told us it may have leaches) so we just took some photos and shot off to find our campsite for the night.
This turned into a bit of an adventure, driving up and down the beach several times! We thought we were staying on a campsite with facilities, but it turned out to just be a bit of land on the beach with bushes for toilets! lovely. It was amazing at night, the sky is beautiful-1000's of stars! There were 4 vans (44people) all camped at the same site so we all had a bit of a party on the beach, torches essential! Only problem is the dingos! They're wild dogs on the island which we had been warned about prior to leaving. If you leave any food out they come and pester you, they had killed a young boy a week or so before we got there so they're not the friendliest of dogs! They're fine if they're left alone. But it's very scary when they come sniffing round the tents and you try not to move!
Cooking was a bit of an effort throughout but our german friends seemed to enjoy that part!!
On the second day 2 of the german girls took over the driving, we headed up the beach to Maheno Wreck. An old ship that was wrecked in 1935, it was bought by the Japanese beforehand. It's amazing to see how much it had corroded already! It was a pretty cool site. We did some more cooking and washing up- spag bol for lunch! It took about an hour tho as one of the gas cannisters was empty, nothing to do with the fact we left it open over night.
We all headed to Lake Wabby after lunch, tho not all of us made it. The lads and the german girls began the walk while we were pondering at the sign post which told us it was an hour and a half walk and we were worried about the tides. We walked a bit up the track but thought we wouldn't make it in time so turned around. The walk through the rainforest was pretty amazing tho! We headed back to the beach but got a bit bored and Gray had the key to the van. Rach found an open window on the van so our small friend Hannah climbed through! We got the spare key and went for a little drive! Took the rubbish to the disposal while we were at it.
We didn't want to stay away 2 long incase they came back and got worried so we went back to where we left them and did some aerobics on the beach!
That night it was 1 of the lads in one of the other groups birthday so everyone got together for a drink before another early night!!
We woke up at 6 for sunrise, it was slow coming up as it was cloudy, but was still rly pretty when it did! We all went to Lake Mckenzie, the most popular on the island (photo). It's rly beautiful, a fresh water like which you can drink from! The 5 of us that hadn't made it to Lake Wabby decided we'd go there for a bit and go back to Mckenzie before leaving Fraser Island. It all went a bit wrong tho!
We were almost at Lake Wabby when we got stuck in soft sand. After some digging we managed to get the van unbogged, but then it got stuck again and we couldn't save it this time! After 20 mins of stressing another car came along and offered to take two of us to a phone. And as we were stressed and stupid this is what we did! (don't split up!!!) Luce and Han jumped in the car and drove for what seemed hours. While Vic and the two Rach's were waiting anxiously feeling useless. After about an hour waiting another car came, four english people who liked driving in sand! They got us out with ease, so we sat and waited for the girls for about another hour. After lots of panicking and drama we all made it back to the barge just in time for our ferry back to the mainland. woo.
Dingo safe!
