day 7
You know those CD's that have pre-recorded sounds to help you fall asleep? ocean waves, rain? an approaching thunderstorm? A shaky wind on your tent accompanied by Intense lightning and thunder so loud it shakes the ground your sleeping on, all while rain is coming into your "waterproof tent"? I apprently got that last one.
I'm really trying to make light of one of the scariest nights of my life. There was no sign of rain all day or night, but of course without wifi or phone service, I couldnt check my iphone to see the weather radar. At any rate, I woke up to the flashes of lightning which werent so bad, until the thunder rolled in and literally shook me on the ground. Then rain was pounding my tent pretty hard, and somehow was leaking in various places. I was only on about 2 hours of sleep when all of this HELL woke me up. I frantically tried to move things into dry spots, all while hoping i could fall back asleep. THEN the wind kicked up and was trying to turn my tent into a kite. I was just waiting for the tent pegs to come out of the dirt, and tent and ME going tumbling across the ground. Thankfully the shleppy little tent pegs held, though my tent shook for hours. I gotta tell ya, its pretty scary sitting in a stupid tent, all while getting pounded by mother nature, and being helpless to do anything about it. I actually played with the thought of getting out, packing up , and hopping on the bike to seek better shelter, but knew within seconds, me and everything else would have been drenched. So i waited out what was definitely the scariest part of the trip yet. ( i just knocked wood )
sigh
At about 7AM the rains finally stopped. I was exhausted from no sleep and started packing up wet gear to the best of my ability. Oddly enough there was one more tent set up near mine. They must have came in late in the night while I atually was sleeping. They were a couple from Nova scotia, which I've been meeting a lot of people from there for some reason. They said they managed to set up a little before midnight, and got in their tent before the rains came. But they too woke up slightly wet. so chalk it all up to the s*** storm.
2 odd facts about canada I've noticed
1) they put their toilet paper on the roll BACKWARDS (under not over)
2) They put gravy and/or vinegar on their fries, and think that THATS cool.
ANYWAY..I packed up my wet gear, and put it all on my wet bike. Put on my wet helmet, and drove my wet ass west to Dryden, Ontario. Hoping it would be.....Dry (sorry)
The whole ride was rather gray, and boring. no rain, just cold, and miserable. I rode about 100 miles to Dryden, which....wasn't dry at all! it started to rain again SO I pushed on to Kenora. and when I finally just couldnt take the rain anymore, I saw a beacon in the darkness...
KENORA inn MOTEL..FREE WIFI
I'm in!
So, I figured I would call it a day at only 12:30PM. The rain won today. I was in no mood to put up with it anymore, and was tired and beaten down.
Wifi is weird around here, and by here I mean Canada. I pull into big towns and cant get it anywhere, then i get into other places(like kenora) and I get it at the Motel, the mcdonalds, even the laundremat where i Finally got to clean my clothes. That was a good feeling.
Why do I keep seeing the same FAMILY GUY episodes everywhere I go??
I also got to finally vidchat with Ashely, and email people, and get texts, and all that great stuff I did without while I was getting smacked around by a class 5 hurricane. I originally typed class 6, but dumbed it down to a 5 for humbling reasons.
Im still 2 days ahead of schedule, though word around town is rain is still going to last through sunday. So hoping Im not stuck here another day. Im only about 150 miles out of Winnipeg. which means Im finally out of Ontario.
219 miles today (sux)
total miles = 1,988
