The Museum of American History was fascinating - could have spent a day here but only a few hours were possible.
This photo is of Dr H Nelson Jackson with his dog "Buds" who were the first to cross the USA in a car - it took them 63 days. Jackson picked up Buds in Idaho and because of the dust getting in Buds eyes, Jackson bought him some goggles! I thought this was a rather cute tale of a man and his faithful dog. Jackson donated to the museum his car and Buds goggles!
Jackson also took with him Sewall Crocker, a mechanic, and the two men were the first two to cross America in a car. Costing over $60, 000 in 1903 this was a massive trip as there were no roads built at the time and they had to travel near the railway and experienced frequent breakdowns. It was a period of pioneering adventures.
There were trains, cars, wagons, and all kinds of memorabilia in the museum. A 1965 Ford Chevrolet reminded me of dad and his passion for these American cars. A covered wagon reminded me of my youth and seeing John Wayne in all those 'cowboy and Indian' movies.
It was a great way to spend a few hours, learning about a slice of American history in air conditioned comfort -outside it was a very hot and humid.
