An early start followed with the normal wake-up routine before going to the mess hut to savour breakfast. The day was incredibly misty which kept the temperature low as we tucked into pancakes, eggs and hot coffee.
After a short word of thanks and tip to the kitchen staff we were in the vehicles for the relatively short journey from the crater rim to the crater floor. And the hunt for animals began!
The game drive lasted around 3 hours and after completing sightings of the big 5 (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo) the highlight today was watching a lioness on the prowl. Who knew that it was the womenfolk that did the hunting??!?Despite several chances and lots of silent encouragement from onlookers she turned down the chance of a zebra (twice) or wildebeest kill. A little frustrating for us but it was still fantastic to share a few hours in her life.
As we parked up for a toilet break a little later near a pond full of hippos, a lion nonchalantly strolled by to chill out by the water. Suddenly another one appeared at the crest of a nearby hill which signalled for everyone to stop what they were doing and return immediately to the safety of our vehicles. Scary but a bit of an adrenaline rush at the same time!
We stopped once more to watch yet another lioness on the prowl before finally leaving the crater and driving the long rocky road out of the National Park.
