We woke early to another sunny warm day in Hollywood. For breakfast we opted for a combo of the hotels coffee & fruit and our own breads and eggs. Like last year I boiled some eggs in the rooms coffee maker last night to up the protein content of the supplied breakfast and we had bought healthy breads to replace the really bad white stuff they supply. Pete of course hit the pastries and muffins as well :-)
We set off on foot to explore a bit, found a supermarket for the last couple of things we needed and spotted some food trucks to go back to later for lunch. On the way back to the hotel we found a huge police presence, ambos and fire brigade on the corner of Vermont & Sunset. A section of the sidewalk was cordoned off and under a sheet was a body. Someone had jumped from the hospital building on the corner. It was like something straight out of a cop show! While wandering the area we kept spotting the scene, the body just stayed there for hours.
Picking up the car we headed up to the Griffin Park observatory. The view from up there was incredible, the famous Hollywood sign on one side and on the other the whole city was laid out below us. We spent some time checking all the views out, climbing up to the roof top observation area and taking heaps of pics. The whole valley is like a tinder box, no smoking signs are everywhere, not surprising given how easily it would all go up in flames.
We headed back via a different, very windy road and managed to navigate back to the hotel without consulting Betty. The body had finally been scraped off the sidewalk but the cops etc were still there.
We walked to where we'd spotted the food trucks earlier and each got a chicken quesadilla for lunch which were very good.
The days before we travelled are catching up on us, we decided on a power nap about 3 PM and woke up at 8! After a shower we headed back up the hill to the observatory. What an awesome view at night!! The staff had smaller telescopes out that we could sort of join a small queue and we got to check out Saturn and a couple of stars, one blue the other orange, pretty fun :-) the guys manning these telescopes were very cool nerds, the second one gave us the spiel on what we were going to see when our turn came and then offered to take questions on "space, stars, planets, the telescopes, astronomy in general, astro physics whatever". We thought it was hilarious the casual way he offered to answer any questions on all but life the universe and everything in it (clearly we all know the answer to that is 42!) lmao
We took a lot of pics of the LA skyline all lit up, many of them with Skippy out for his first major photo op. The park was closing as we left at 10.15 and making dinner seemed all too hard so we hit Mamma & Pappas Pizza joint, awesome pizza with some extras thrown in the box, Parmesan cheese, chilli flakes and some slices of green chillies. We took it back to the hotel and paired it with the perfect choice, buds for Pete, cab sav for me. Still loving the 1.5lt bottles of wine, Spanish this time, for $6 :-)
When we got back to the hotel the car park was full so we had to park next door in the essentially vacant lot, hope the car's still there tomorrow morning!
Tomorrow we move on to Big Bear Lake for a couple of nights, hope the deluge has stopped out that way by the time we get there.
