Sophie's Round the World Trip

Mandurah, Western Australia

Last Monday me and Emma went to Perth to get information on fruit picking. We found out from an English, dreadlocked, experienced traveller that at this time of the year and in our situation we would probably be better of staying in Mandurah in the jobs we're in. When we found this out we both felt pretty down because although fruit picking would be working we would still get to travel to a new place. We've both got very attached to little Mandurah but we would really like to see more of Australia. I think what we have to remember is we came to Australia to work and that is what we've done, luckily we've had a lots of fun and made some wicked friends on the way. Travelling Australia is a trip on its own I think. However we're flying out from Sydney so we're going to spend a week there at the end. When we found out we were staying we decided that the caravan would no longer be ideal.

The caravan was great while it lasted but it started to get cramped and expensive for what it was. Dorothy and Sedgewick got an offer from their French Canadian friends to go and live with them, and Tully (the son of the owners of the pub Emma works in) said we could go and live with him. The only problem with Tully's is it's not really a home… but a squat… Tully's squat has drunken drawings, writing, stickers all over every wall. There's no lock on the front door and there are a few windows that don't have any glass in them, there is no washing machine or oven. I'm not sure whether there's carpet or floorboards because the floor is caked in rubbish. When I last stayed at Tully's we slept in the garden because it was so dirty. However when we went round to have a look again Tully had cleaned it for us and although it was still disgusting by anyone's standards I could see a glimmer of hope! Also Tully has a TV, DVD player, plenty of DVD's, a laptop with internet, a garden and a toasty maker (that Tully cooks everything in)! Of course if we moved into Tully's there would be a risk of fleas, nits, eaten by rats etc but at the same time we wouldn't have to pay any rent and if me and Emma moved in we would be guaranteed a seriously fantastic time living in the party squat of Mandurah. We decided that Tully's would be great (well do-able) but not for the next three weeks maybe just for one week… Megan another friend said we could move into her house after the 7th…. So just when we thought we would have to stay at Tully's for two weeks Shane turned up.

Shane is my most regular customer in the bakery and works just down the road. I told him about out house hunting and he offered us a room. Me and Emma went to have a look and I have seriously never been into a guys house that is soooo clean!! I think me and Emma are going to have to pull our socks up a bit cleanliness and tidiness wise!! Looks like the Walton's house from the outside and on the inside it's all hippyfied and cool. I'm moving in there tomorrow and Emma's moving in on Wednesday so that's exciting! So the plan at the moment is a week's at Shane's, a week at Tully's and a week at Megan's.

Ok enough about that… now what I've been up to the last few weeks…

Sunday's are my best days because usually on the weekdays when I get up in the morning everyone's still sleeping- very irritating! But on Sundays it's the other way round Dorethy and Sedgewick have to do Sunday lunches and Emma usually has an early work shift so I just snuggle down, turn over and go back to sleep while everyone else has to be up and out! Monday is my library day… yes yes I know im a nerd! But you get free DVD's, free books, magazines and internet access so it's really very good! Wednesday night is karaoke night at the pub and me and Emma go and watch and laugh! Lots of fun! Wednesday the 14th May was our half way point and we celebrated that in the pub. Two nights out of Thursday, Friday and Saturday are spent going out and one is spent sleeping! We went to a 70's night a few weeks ago which was brilliant. Even though im not staff at the pub I get staff drinks vouchers which is handy. After two rubbish attempts of making Thai food me and Emma finally gave up and treated ourselves to Thai dinner out. Best meal I've had since Thailand! Last Tuesday went to a quiz night at the pub, we played with Rick and Nick… turns out we're not a particularly bright bunch!!

The perfect end of the caravan was Reuben moving in with us (one of the guys who lived with us in Vanessa's house) for the last week. And even Dave came to stay for one night, so it was the original six of us back together one last time! Me and Emma watched the football at Tully's house. Six of us all together- 3 red, 3 blues- great game!! Stayed up until 5.30 in the morning watching it and I had work at 10- well worth it though!

Friday night me, Em, Reuben and Dave went out in Fremantle- such a wicked place to go out in. We missed the last train from Perth and Reuben had a bright idea to do a taxi run… We talked about it for a while and came to the conclusion that me and Em wouldn't be able to run fast enough. So we would get dropped of first. Dave was scared as he'd never done a taxi run before so if he bottled he could get out with us. All the way in the cab I was so scared!! And everyone else FELL ASLEEP!! When we finally got to Mandurah me, Em and Dave got out and as soon as the taxi was out of sight legged it back to the caravan to wait anxiously for Reuben. He came back 5 minutes later, had got cornered by the taxi and had to pay!! Bright idea Reub!!

Yesterday I went to Fremantle to see what it's like in the day. Because it was Sunday there was a market. Very cool. A mix between Camden and Islington. I treated myself to Shampoo and lunch. Got home and realised I've put on a seriously worrying amount of weight that needs to be lost pronto. I think Shane seems like a clean, sober, healthy kind of guy so I think that will do me and Emma some good.

Still loving my job. The thought of leaving Mandurah is a little sad but exciting all at the same time.

Oh yes and just something I think you all should know- Sedgewicks names is actually spelt- Cedric, I found this out at the beginning of the week but have decided to keep pronouncing it and spelling Sedgewick- it's more fun!

Hope Everyone's doing well and enjoying Spring!
