Reporting in from the NSW North coast. We are loving this part of the country, beautiful beaches backed by stunning rainforests - it seems we have left the best until last!
We arrived in Byron Bay on Tuesday and immediately loved the place. The coastal scenery is just beautiful, very rugged with pristine beaches. The surrounding forest through the hills and valleys is full of huge ferns and palms, very tropical and pretty. The town itself is a pumping place full of great shops and restaurants - a place for all the 'beautiful young things' to be seen. We took a drive to the lighthouse and took a walk along the cliff to stand at the most eastern mainland point in Australia. The view from there was awesome and we were lucky enough to see some whales making their way down the coast. Did a bit of 'hippie watching' at the beach, they had the bongos out and were playing up a storm! Had a top night catching up with mates from home at the beach pub, was so nice to see people from home - think I may finally be a bit homesick!
Grudgingly got packed up and headed off the next morning for South West Rocks, as we had heard lots about it and wanted to check it out for ourselves. Got settled in to a great park by the river and went out exploring. First stop was the town itself, which was quaint, with a nice protected little beach. It was a bit chilly for a dip though and the wind was freezing, so we decided to explore by car. We drove out to Trial Bay National Park to look at the Trial Bay Gaol ruins. It was really picturesque out there and there was a fantastic camping area with a protected beach, definitely on our must-do list for next time. We also drove up to Trial Bay lighthouse and took in some more amazing coastal views. Went back to the caravan park for a very noisy night of not much sleep, thanks to a toddler somewhere in the camp who decided to have a 2 hour tantrum in the middle of the night and kids screaming and yelling from 6am. Our two kids slept through the whole thing but we were two sleep-deprived and grumpy souls, so decided to move along to another place.
We headed off down the coast and decided to make Port Macquarie our next stopover. Had to stop quickly at Fredos Pie Shop at Frederickton, where they make 50 varieties of pies each day, out of the 160 recipes they have! Adam was stoked, as pie is his favorite food group! We left there with full bellies and drove the rest of the way to Port Macquarie. Arrived at the Lighthouse Beach Tourist Park and decided that this lovely quiet park, backed by a rainforest and a golf course, would be our camp for the night. Went exploring along Lighthouse Beach, which was beautiful but very unsafe for swimming due to the rips and currents everywhere. There were plenty of nice beaches all the way along Port Macquarie, but they all looked pretty choppy today and the water was freezing! We decided not to swim and headed back to camp so the kids could get some homework done and we could just relax for a while.
Tomorrow we head to Myall Lakes National Park to meet some friends and camp the night.
