We spent five nights residing on the beautiful Gili Trawangan, a tiny little island just off Lombok. Although it's small, it's very much developed for tourists and there's no lack of them here..it's very busy! With clear seas and white sand it's very different from Bali's black sand beaches!
Thankfully our transport ran smoothly from Bali and we arrived around 10.30am. We spent the rest of the day chilling at Pearl Beach Resort, where you pay the equivalent of £5 for a sunbed/beanbag, towel, wifi, pool use and lunch, all whilst having a beautiful view of the deep blue ocean, Gili Meno and Lombok itself..a bargain I think you'd agree!
On our second day we rented bikes and cycled the full circle around the island, stopping along the way for a drink. We were forced to dismount a couple of times due to the sand smothering the paths. It made good entertainment seeing people trying to battle through it before it finally stopped them.
After a nice relax on the beach we took advantage of having the bikes and rode back round the opposite side of the island to watch the sunset, whilst I had a cheeky bintang and Jazz took full advantage of the 2 for 1 cocktails. Whilst the sun set we managed to get a cheeky photo on the only sea swing we've ever seen. It made for one of our best sunset shots!
That night we enjoyed a BBQ dinner at what became our favourite restaurant, Scallywags. I took full advantage of the free salad bar before destroying my monster ribs. Jazz was slightly more reserved and had a light chicken breast, maybe that's why her six pack is out doing mine. However we did return a couple of nights later and she jumped on board the monster ribs too!
The next day we went on a snorkelling trip. First we stopped just off Gili T where we are staying. It was pretty cool and deep down there was an old wreck. Second stop was turtle point, this is off of Gili Meno the next island across. We followed our guide as he followed the current trying to spot turtles. It was so deep but we managed to spot 3 in total and our guide took our gopro down and filmed one eating off the seabed. I attempted to duck dive but the pressure was too much, it must have been atleast 15m down! It was cool but it was a shame we couldn't have got any closer. We then stopped for lunch on Gili Air, the last of the Gili's, and the closest to Lombok. We had a good chat we two girls from Australia while we waited for our food and got some good tips for when we eventually get there. Not unusual for Asia, our food never turned up which was most disappointing...so our lunch consisted of an ice cream. We didn't mind too much as they have ice cream shops everywhere on the Gili's selling the best flavours. We have now tried various different flavours... Our fave being Ferrero Rocher. Dangerous.
The last stop on the trip was just off Gili Air. It was ok but nothing compares to seeing turtles.
After the trip it was straight to scallywags to finally get something proper to eat, it was safe to say we thoroughly enjoyed it!
The last two days we spent time snorkelling just off the beach where we were staying and found even more turtles! This time in much shallower water so we could dive under and swim right next to them! It was also pretty cool that it was usually just the two of us to see them. They don't seem to care that you're there and just carry on eating the seaweed. We followed one for a good 20 mins as he went about his business, it's safe to say we're fascinated by them.
We had an amazing time on Gili T, next stop Mt Rinjani.
