We thought we had nothing to do today but we got a call at lunch time to go and vaccinate the elephant we were meant to do on Tuesday. It was at thorny bush game reserve and we drove around on a game vehicle for a while until we tracked the elephant down. This bull elephant was being a little aggressive towards the tour vehicles so we were injecting him via a dart with a substance called GNRH that inhibits the effect of testosterone. We were very close to the herd and the bull was only a few metres away, looking straight at us. In an open top game truck it was a very intense experience. The darting was successful, he just stood there. He didn't seem too aggressive, but was mock charging a little and making deep snorting noises.
I've never been so close to an elephant, it was great! On our drive out we saw a herd of buffalo and some giraffe. I can't wait for our game drive round thorny bush reserve on sunday! We're going out for a meal tonight with a local project which should be a lot of fun! :)
