I've been up to London to visit the visa processing people (and cunningly survived the riots at the same time). The Russian Consulate has farmed out its visa processing service to an external company based in Old Street. I paid them a visit yesterday morning, fully expecting a frosty reception and a difficult few hours while they presented me with endless problems, but no! They were very pleasant and business-like, and while the whole thing did take quite a long time, I was actually out in under half an hour, and my passport (and hopefully visa) will be ready for collection on 16th.
I had to have passport photos taken, for which I went to a shop up the road. The very nice polite friendly man told me which part of the camera I had to look at, but I missed it, and when I looked up, it was an odd-looking camera so it was not self-evident where I was meant to look. And he took just one photo and ran off to process it, so the photo came out looking startled, and I'm definitely not looking at the camera. Oh well. No passport photo will ever be as good as the photo-shopped one from Krasnoyarsk. I might just have copies of it made, or find a shop in Moscow which does the same thing, and get a lifetime's supply of flattering passport photos.
